Synopsis

After her father’s untimely demise in a mining accident and her mother’s abandonment, Lauren Lindsay is no stranger to loss. She’s used to living l
ife for one person: herself. That is, until another family tragedy thrusts three children into her care and uproots her life in ways she could never imagine.

Lauren's first instinct is to run, until she meets their striking, mysterious neighbor Dean Powell. Their immediate chemistry and his connection with her late father just might be enough to keep her in town long enough to uncover pieces of her past that she never had answers to. Dean’s shady past and her reluctance to trust him could cost her the life she's always been searching for, but will she run back to her old life?

Or will she choose to stay and live the life her father always imagined for her?

My review

I published my review here. This is such an amazing book and I rated it with 5/5 stars!!

Interview with Lily Paradis

Me: First of all, I want to thank you for agreeing with this interview. I read Ignite and I’m so happy and excited for you! I can’t imagine how you must feel. Releasing a debut novel must do strange things to your emotions right now, so tell me: how does it feel? ;) How did you feel when your book was out on the market? Were you relieved, anxious, scared, happy,…?
Lily: I was extremely excited, but it was kind of anticlimactic as well! Before Ignite, I didn’t quite realize how long publishing takes. I had seen the cover, and I knew what the content would be long before I could hold it in my hand. Sometimes I think it still hasn’t hit me yet! Maybe once Volition comes out I’ll finally feel like it’s real!

Me: How did you decide you wanted to be an author?
Lily: I’ve been writing little stories for as long as I can remember. When I was in University I finally started writing short stories, and then full-length novels.

Me: Is there something or someone who inspired you while writing Ignite?

Lily: I stayed with a family for about a week while their parents were out of town. There were two girls and one boy, and Callie, Chase, and Emma are very similar to their real-life counterparts! I started to wonder what it would be like if this was my life, and how I would react!

Me: Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer to just see where an idea takes you?
Lily: It definitely depends what book I’m working on. For Ignite, I mulled the idea around in my head for a few months before I finally wrote a solid outline of events. Then I filled it in with things that popped into my head along the way. I hate completely outlining something with every detail because I think it takes the fun out of it!

Me: Do you see yourself in one of the characters? If yes, who?
Lily: Certain characters were taken straight from my life, so if these people read it… I’m in trouble! ;)  I think I see myself most in Lauren. I’m sarcastic and sassy at times, but I hope people see the strength that she gathers within herself by the end.

Me: Is Ignite the first book you ever wrote or do you have some unpublished books saved somewhere?
Lily: Ignite is the first book I’ve published, but not the first I’ve written. The first book I ever finished writing is called Equilibrium, and I’m not sure when that will be out. It’s more of a Science Fiction/Fantasy novel. I have a ton of mostly finished and partly finished manuscripts that need work. My next book, Volition, will be out in January! It might be my favorite book that I’ve written so far.

Me: What was the hardest thing about writing Ignite? Did you struggled with a writer’s block?
Lily: The editing process was the most difficult for me for many reasons. There are some parts in Ignite that weren’t fixed after the file was corrupted, and that’s my biggest regret! I wish more than anything that it was absolutely perfect. I did have a little bit of writer’s block, but I worked on other novels to try and keep it fresh when I went back to Ignite! I’m a brat when it comes to writing. I won’t write it if I don’t feel it. I want everything to be genuine because I’m feeling it in that moment. I’ll just go write something else until I can get myself to the right place to right a certain scene. I think that if the author isn’t feeling it, the readers won’t either.

Me: Tell us more about the cover of Ignite, because I love it! The colors are beautiful and I like the explanation of the title. How did it came out? Who designed it?
Lily: Sarah Hansen of Okay Creations designed it, and it is brilliant! The definition on the cover was her idea. I recently had a comment from E.L. James (of Fifty Shades of Grey) who said she loved the cover! That was surreal.

Me: Can you tell us something more about the sequel, Arclight? Or is it still a work in progress?
Lily: Arclight is almost finished, but it still needs a bit of work. It happened by accident when I was writing a scene that explained why Dean was at the DMV that day from his perspective. It didn’t feel like it belonged in Ignite, so I decided he would have to get his own book.

Me: Thank you so much for your time. I wish you lots of luck with your next books!
Lily: Thank YOU so much, Melissa!

Book Of The Week #4: Existence by Abbi Glines

Every Sunday I share a book I discovered during the week. I think it's a good idea for you guys if you're looking for random recommendations ;)
If you want to see the previous ones, just click here.

How did I find it?

Goodreads always suggest books based upon the book you’re reading. I rarely look at these recommendations, but this time a very sexy male model on the cover got my attention. It’s the same model as the one on the LUX series covers:  Mr. Pepe Toth! The synopsis of the books seems amazing and I saw lot’s of good reviews, so I’m excited to read this one in the future!

By the way: I made a little challenge for myself: read all the books with him on the cover! :D Does anyone want to join? ;)

What is the book about?

What happens when you're stalked by Death? You fall in love with him, of course.
Pagan Moore doesn't cheat Death, but instead, falls in love with him.

Seventeen year old Pagan Moore has seen souls her entire life. Once she realized the strangers she often saw walking through walls were not visible to anyone else, she started ignoring them. If she didn't let them know she could see them, then they left her alone. Until she stepped out of her car the first day of school and saw an incredibly sexy guy lounging on a picnic table, watching her with an amused smirk on his face. Problem is, she knows he's dead.

Not only does he not go away when she ignores him, but he does something none of the others have ever done. He speaks. Pagan is fascinated by the soul. What she doesn't realize is that her appointed time to die is drawing near and the wickedly beautiful soul she is falling in love with is not a soul at all.

He is Death and he's about to break all the rules.

Review: The Elite by Kiera Cass

My rating: ★★★★+0.5
Genre: young adult, dystopia, romance, chick-lit
Series: The Selection #2

Blurb from Goodreads:

The Selection began with thirty-five girls.
Now with the group narrowed down to the six Elite, the competition to win Prince Maxon's heart is fiercer than ever—and America is still struggling to decide where her heart truly lies. Is it with Maxon, who could make her life a fairy tale? Or with her first love, Aspen?

America is desperate for more time. But the rest of the Elite know exactly what they want—and America's chance to choose is about to slip away.

My review:

“It wasn’t like I made his world better. It was like I was his world. It wasn’t some explosion; it wasn’t fireworks. It was a fire, burning slowly from the inside out.”

This book ladies and gentlemen is one big ‘WHAT’. It’s super confusing. For me at least.
I like love-triangles (please don’t judge me), but seriously, I’m as confused as America! I just can’t pick. My feelings are all over the place. I’m Team Maxon since the very beginning, but now I’m seriously hesitating. When she was with Maxon, I basically forgot about Aspen. But the same thing happened with Aspen. They are both so amazing... just until the end… (view spoiler here).

“I remembered suddenly that Aspen had always been this way. He sacrificed sleep for me, he risked getting caught out after curfew for me, he scrounged together pennies for me. Aspen's generosity was harder to see because it wasn't as grand as Maxon's, but the heart behind what he gave was so much bigger.”

This series is very addictive!! I finished the book in a day! I couldn’t put it down. I expected to find out more about the rebels in this book. I mean.. we did, but not enough in my opinion :D This is why I can’t wait to read The One! I’m starting it tonight. I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS. I thought I could predict the ending, because of the titles of the books, but now I don’t think I can. I bet so much is going to happen in The One and I’m so excited!!

“I sighed. "Actually, Mom, we argue pretty regularly."
"What?" She gaped at me. "Well, stop it!"
"Oh, and I kneed him in the groin once."
Mom was paler then snow.
"America, tell me you're joking. Tell me you didn't assault the prince."
I don't know why, but the word assault pushed us all on the edge; and May, Dad, and I bent over laughing as Mom stared at us.
"Sorry, Mom," I managed.
"Oh, good lord."

Review: Ignite by Lily Paradis

Genre: young adult, contemporary, romance.

Or will she choose to stay and live the life her father always imagined for her?

My review:

*ARC provided by author in exchange for an honest review.*

If I hadn’t been so busy with work these days, I would have probably finished this book in a few hours. It was that good. I loved it so much and it killed me every time I had to put it down.

“Lauren,” Kenzie managed finally as she dramatically fanned herself, and then me. “
You did not just meet him last night.”
“No really,” I said when I could speak. “He kind of swept me off my feet. Literally.”

After finishing this book I wanted to start reading it all over again. I grew so attached to the main characters. Lauren and Dean are two characters who’ve been through so much because of personal problems. They are both flawed because of their pasts, but that makes them fit so perfect together. Lauren is so strong and I’m so proud of her about what she reached in the ending of the book. I would never have been able to do it. She struggled a bit at first, but then she just overpassed everything. She is brilliant. Yes, I’m super proud of her.
Dean is sexy, funny and so mysterious. He’s also very protective and the family he has left is so important for him. He basically stole my heart from the very beginning. I finished this book a few hours ago and I already miss him so much (I might have book hangover… okay, I probably have..).
For one moment, when the mysterious parts about him and Lauren were about to be revealed, I was scared something very bad or wrong will be revealed. My heart was pounding so fast at that moment. And I loved how it turned out!!

“You and your rugged sexuality better scoot over,” I whispered. “Unless you want to be responsible for making me pass out on this plane. I’m not sure that flight attendant knows CPR.”
“It’s okay,” he said, lowering his lips all the way to my ear so they touched my skin when he spoke. “I’m really good at mouth-to-mouth.”
Holy shit.

The whole storyline is just ... * sighs*  It was heartbreaking, sad, funny, heartwarming,…
I seriously don’t know what I expected from this book in the beginning, but I’m 100% it’s so much better than I ever could have imagined. This book is SO GOOD. I can’t describe it otherwise! All the minor characters are so nice too. Especially Emma. She's so cute and she made me laugh a few times. I loved how much she loved Dean! Lauren's dad also stole my heart in this book. She must have been an amazing dad. What he did for Lauren and Dean is just indescribable.

I never wanted to kiss anyone more than I did when Dean Powell opened his beautiful, sleepy eyes and looked at me.

This book is basically perfect to me. Lily’s writing style is also very enjoyable. She knows how to keep the reader entertained and describing feelings are one of her stronger points in this book.
Lily, this is more than amazing for a debut novel! I can't wait more of your books!
I cannot wait for the sequel of Ignite: Arclight! Apparently it’s in Dean’s POV! So I’m super excited!

“I’m so proud of you,” I said over her shoulder. “I’m so proud of you that I’m going to stop at the store on my way home.”
Callie pulled back. “Why?”
“Because,” I told her. “I’m going to bake you a cake.”
“You suck at baking,” she said.
This was true.
“Okay,” I said, “I’m going to buy you a cake.”
“Cool.”

Weekly Recommendation: Paranormal Romance

Paranormal romance is a sub-genre of the romance novel related to paranormal fiction.
In a paranormal romance the subject is more focused on the romance, but it includes aspects beyond the range of scientific explanation. Personally, this is one of my favorite genres ever. I do enjoy 'plain' romances, but when a book is paranormal I prefer the little 'love-twist' in it. These are some of my favorites book/series ever, including one I have on my tbr list since I finished Vampire Academy.
Oh and just so you know: I think one of the best paranormal romance authors is Jennifer L. Armentrout! So take her two book recommendation very serious :D When I say they are awesome, they are phenomenal!

BOOK ONE: Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Series: LUX
My rating: ★★★★★

Description:

Starting over sucks.
When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I'd pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring... until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.
And then he opened his mouth.
Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something... unexpected happens.
The hot alien living next door marks me.
You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon's touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I'm getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.
If I don't kill him first, that is.

BOOK TWO: Obsession by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Series: LUX spin-off (adult)
My rating: ★★★★★

Description:

He’s arrogant, domineering, and... To. Die. For.
Hunter is a ruthless killer. And the Department of Defense has him firmly in their grasp, which usually doesn’t chafe too badly because he gets to kill bad guys. Most of the time he enjoys his job. That is, until he’s saddled with something he’s never had to do before: protect a human from his mortal enemy.
Serena Cross didn’t believe her best friend when she claimed to have seen the son of a powerful senator turn into something... unnatural. Who would? But then she witnesses her friend’s murder at the hands of what can only be an alien, thrusting her into a world that will kill to protect their secret.
Hunter stirs Serena’s temper and her lust despite their differences. Soon he’s doing the unthinkable—breaking the rules he’s lived by, going against the government to keep Serena safe. But are the aliens and the government the biggest threats to Serena’s life… or is it Hunter?

BOOK THREE: The Host by Stephanie Meyer
Series: The Host (trilogy)
My rating: ★★★★★

Description:

Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. The earth has been invaded by a species that take over the minds of human hosts while leaving their bodies intact. Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, didn't expect to find its former tenant refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.
As Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of Jared, a human who still lives in hiding, Wanderer begins to yearn for a man she's never met. Reluctant allies, Wanderer and Melanie set off to search for the man they both love.

BOOK FOUR: Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia
Series: Caster Chronicles
My rating: ★★★★

Description:

Is falling in love the beginning . . . or the end?
In Ethan Wate's hometown there lies the darkest of secrets . . .
There is a girl. Slowly, she pulled the hood from her head . . . Green eyes, black hair. Lena Duchannes.
There is a curse. On the Sixteenth Moon, the Sixteenth Year, the Book will take what it's been promised. And no one can stop it.
In the end, there is a grave.
Lena and Ethan become bound together by a deep, powerful love. But Lena is cursed and on her sixteenth birthday, her fate will be decided. Ethan never even saw it coming.

BOOK FIVE: Bloodlines by Richelle Mead
Series: Bloodlines #1 (spin-off from Vampire Academy)
My rating: marked as tbr

Description:

Sydney is an alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of human and vampires. They protect vampire secrets - and human lives. When Sydney is torn from her bed in the middle of the night, at first she thinks she's still being punished for her complicated alliance with dhampir Rose Hathaway. But what unfolds is far worse. EXCERPT:

As I lay there, trying to swallow a loud, obnoxious yawn, I remembered something he’d said when we first met, about life being too short. I imagined he had firsthand experience with shortened lives while he was serving. That mentality came from experience. I got that now. Could even understand it, but there was something I didn’t understand. “Why?” I asked. There was a beat. “Why what?” Jax sounded tired, and I should shut up or point out that I was now tired and could sleep, so he could leave. But I didn’t. “Why are you here? You don’t know me and . . .” I trailed off, because there really wasn’t anything left to say.  A minute went by, and he hadn’t answered my question, and then I think another minute ticked on, and I was okay with him not answering because maybe he didn’t even know. Or maybe he was just bored and that was why he was here.
But then he moved. Jax pressed against my back, and the next breath I took got stuck in my throat. My eyes shot open. The sheet and blanket were between us, but they felt like nothing.  “What are you doing?” I asked. “Getting comfortable.” He dropped an arm over my waist, and my entire body jerked against his. “It’s time to sleep I think.”
“But—”
“You can’t sleep when you talk,” he remarked.
“You don’t need to be all up on me,” I pointed out.
His answering chuckle stirred the hair along the back of my neck. “Honey, I’m not all up on you.” I freaking begged to differ on that point. I started to wiggle away, but the arm around my waist tightened, holding me in place.  “You’re not going anywhere,” he announced casually, as if he wasn’t holding me prisoner in the bed. Okay. The whole prisoner thing might be melodramatic, but he wasn’t letting me up. Not when he was getting all kinds of comfy behind me.  Oh my God, this was spooning. Total spooning. I was spooning with an honorary member of the Hot Guy Brigade. Did I wake up in a parallel universe?
“Sleep,” he demanded, as if the one word carried that much power. “Go to sleep, Calla.” This time his voice was softer, quieter. “Yeah, it doesn’t work that way, Jax. You have a nice voice, but it doesn’t hold the power to make me sleep on your command.” He chuckled. I rolled my eyes, but the most ridiculous thing ever was the fact that after a couple of minutes, my eyes stayed shut. I . . . I actually settled in against him. With his front pressed to my back, his long legs cradling mine, and his arm snug around my waist, I actually did feel safe. More than that, I felt something else—something I hadn’t felt in years.  I felt cared for . . . cherished. Which was the epitome of dumb, because I barely knew him, but feeling that, recognizing what the warm, buzzing feeling was, I fell right asleep.

Bookmail of the past few days!

I'm doing a reread of the Shatter Me series with Yvonne, so it is the perfect excuse to buy the physical books (I own the ebooks) ;) I'm buying the other two probably by the end of the week.

I also bought The Selection Box and I'm currently reading The Elite! Looooooove it so far!

I'm supposed to be on a book buying ban, but so far it is... non-existent? :D

Get to know the author #1: Lindsay Cummings!

Every two weeks I'll present you one of my favorite authors. There are a lot, so be prepared! ;) This week I'm going to talk about Lindsay Cummings!

Personal info from her blog:

Lindsay Cummings is a 23 year old author of YA and MG books at HarperCollins. She lives in Celina, TX with her husband Josh, her hedgehog named Hedwig, her two German Shepherds Hurley and Kai, her wolf cub Kimber, and a draft horse named Dan the Man. Lindsay deals with Chronic Fatigue issues, believes Jesus is the reason for all of her success, and swears that book hoarding is not a problem at all. She’s still waiting on her letter from Hogwarts–it was probably just lost in the mail.

Her books:

Lindsay published two books and she still has two upcoming books.

The Murder Complex and The Fear Trials definitely in my top 10 of the best books I've ever read. Especially in the category dystopia. It's very surprising and the writing styles is amazing! They are YA books with a little romance, mystery, action and TONS of unexpected plot twists. I seriously recommend them.
And I cannot wait for the sequel of TMR, The Death Code. It should be expected on April 21st 2015!

If you want to read more about the books, check out my reviews here:

The Fire of Calderon is the first book in The Balance Keepers series she's writing.
The expected publication date is September 23rd! It's a middle grade fantasy adventure series that takes place in an underground society at the center of the earth. It's packed with action, humor, magic and mystery.
Personally, I cannot wait to read this one! I'm probably way too old, but I don't care :D

Picture from her IG: @authorlindsaycummings
My thoughts about her:

I seriously love this girl. She is AMAZING! She's one of the sweetest authors I know. And I love how interacting she is with her readers. She is definitely a fangirl like us (the readers)! :D And she's so funny! I love watching her videos on her YouTube Channel.

She also created the #Booknerdigans tag. Which is such a nice community of booknerds. There's an official site, so make sure you check it out here

(Random: And I love her hair too oh my god!)

After her father’s untimely demise in a mining accident and her mother’s abandonment, Lauren Lindsay is no stranger to loss. She’s used to living life for one person: herself.

Details about the book:

Release date: September 16th, 2014
Publisher:        Little Brown Books
Length:            320 pages
Series:            Hundred #2
Genre:            young adult, sci-fi, dystopia

What is the book about?:

This book is the sequel of The Hundred. It picks up exactly where the first book ended.

It's been 21 days since the hundred landed on Earth. They're the only humans to set foot on the planet in centuries...or so they thought. Facing an unknown enemy, Wells attempts to keep the group together. Clarke strikes out for Mount Weather, in search of other Colonists, while Bellamy is determined to rescue his sister, no matter the cost. And back on the ship, Glass faces an unthinkable choice between the love of her life and life itself.

In this pulse-pounding sequel to Kass Morgan's The 100, secrets are revealed, beliefs are challenged, and relationships are tested. And the hundred will struggle to survive the only way they can -- together.

I had the chance to read the ARC of this book through NetGalley.
I already read and review it. So I can say this book is really worth it.

BONUS: There's also a tv show about this series. And it's really good. It's on the CW and season 2 starts on October 9th!
