Weekly Recommendation #8: Pretty dresses!

If you deny the fact you never judge a book by its cover, then you're lying! I'm sure every booknerd bought a book once just because of its cover. Am I right or am I right? :D
I did it plenty of times and I never regret it afterwards. To me, the cover of a book is equally important than the plot itself. If the plot sounds good, but it has a weird looking cover, would read it? I know, I wouldn't. That's why this week I'm going to recommend you 5 books that I haven't even read yet. I just fell in love with the cover. So admire these 5 girls with gorgeous dresses on! Click on the cover to be redirected to their Goodreads page! Enjoy! ;)

The Jewel by Amy Ewing

Series: The Lone City #1

Genre: YA, fantasy, sci-fi, dystopia, romance.

Synopsis:

The Jewel means wealth. The Jewel means beauty. The Jewel means royalty. But for girls like Violet, the Jewel means servitude. Not just any kind of servitude. Violet, born and raised in the Marsh, has been trained as a surrogate for the royalty—because in the Jewel the only thing more important than opulence is offspring.

Purchased at the surrogacy auction by the Duchess of the Lake and greeted with a slap to the face, Violet (now known only as #197) quickly learns of the brutal truths that lie beneath the Jewel’s glittering facade: the cruelty, backstabbing, and hidden violence that have become the royal way of life.

Violet must accept the ugly realities of her existence... and try to stay alive. But then a forbidden romance erupts between Violet and a handsome gentleman hired as a companion to the Duchess’s petulant niece. Though his presence makes life in the Jewel a bit brighter, the consequences of their illicit relationship will cost them both more than they bargained for.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn't want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she's made for herself—and realizes that the life she's always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.

Doon by Carey Crorp

Series: Doon #1

When her best friend, Mackenna, invites her to spend the summer in Scotland, Veronica jumps at the opportunity to leave her complicated life behind for a few months.

But the Scottish countryside holds other plans.

Not only has the imaginary kilted boy followed her to Alloway, she and Mackenna uncover a strange set of rings and a very unnerving letter from Mackenna's great aunt—and when the girls test the instructions Aunt Gracie left behind, they find themselves transported to a land that defies explanation. Doon seems like a real-life fairy tale, complete with one prince who has eyes for Mackenna and another who looks suspiciously like the boy from Veronica's daydreams. But Doon has a dark underbelly as well. The two girls could have everything they've longed for...or they could end up breaking an enchantment and find themselves trapped in a world that has become a nightmare.

Defiance by C.J. Redwine

The Maze Runner: The Movie

I finally saw the movie! Twice! :D

I saw it Saturday for the first time and I was OVER-EXCITED! My heart was pounding so fast during 90% of the movie. It was so good! To be honest, I don't remember a lot of details from the book because it's been a long time since I read the book, but I still think the movie follows the book pretty good. Yes, there were some differences, but isn't there always in an adaptation? So I didn't mind ;)

The cast is beyond perfection! Dylan O'Brien did an AMAZING job!! I know him from Teen Wolf and I consider myself as a mayor fan, so I was so glad he had his first big movie. And he deserves all the awards because he was so good! I admired him through the whole movie (he's even hotter on a big screen haha).

Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Newt), Ki Hong Lee (Minho) and Blake Cooper (Chuck) also did an amazing job! They are the perfect actors for these characters. Especially Minho!

I'm just not very happy with Kaya Scodelario as Teresa and I can't even explain why exactly. I guess I imagined her differently... Anyway, that just a minor complaining :D

The way they did the whole maze was just... WOW! It was totally how I imagined it! The grievers were also amazing! Disgusting but amazing :D I imagined them completely different, but the movie-version is way better than the one in my head ;)

Anyway, I just had to see the movie for a second time, so I went back the day after and I loved the movie even more! I cried a little (again) during the ending, because of.... you-know-who :(

The movie reminded me how much I liked the first book. I'm thinking about rereading the whole trilogy again. If you haven't read any of these books yet, please consider reading them, because they are so good! I loved the movie a lot, but the book is so much better. When I reread it, I'll definitely write a decent review for you guys ;)

Now enjoy these three hotties (you're welcome :D):

Minho, Thomas and Newt

Review: Hired Gun, Serial Two by AJ Bennet

My rating: ★★★★
Genre: (new) adult, mystery, paranormal, erotica.
Series: Hired Gun, Serial #2

Blurb from Goodreads:

Assassin Thorne Hollow wants to know two things. Who is the mysterious Kataya Clarke and what the hell kind of mind games is she playing with him?

His curiosity causes him to do something he hasn’t done in over two thousand years. He returns to his home realm only to find out that his father, Theseus had a hand in getting him his job with The Sicarii, the secret society of hit men, leaving Thorne even more confused.

Pissed off, Throne takes his rage out on a nest of vampires. He ends his night with yet another beautiful woman who is not who she appears to be.

My review:

*ARC received in exchange for an honest review*

This sequel picks up where we left in Hired Gun #1.
This time Thorne is determined to find out who Kataya really is and what she wants from him.

Again, this was a very quick read, but I still liked it a lot! It’s stays a little mysterious, but this time we found out more about where Thorne really comes from. I’m still intrigued with everything. Thorne is sexy as hell and very bossy, but I still like him.

He’s currently pissed off because there’s a lot of information hidden from him and he wants answers asap. I can’t wait to find out more about him and how everything that happens is connected together!

By the way, I’m also very curious to find out more about Benny! He seems like a completely different person than Thorne and I want to know more about him and Rota.

Part 3, I’m ready for you!!

Review: Defect Part Two by Autumn Kalquist

Release date: November 1st 2014
My rating: ★★★★
Genre: young adult, sci-fi, dystopia
Series: Defect #2, prequel of Legacy Code

Blurb from Goodreads:

I never asked them to make me this way.

The corporation that gave me superimmunity called me Protected. But then the truth came out, and I lost my freedom. I’m a genetic experiment gone wrong.

Damaged.
Broken.
Defective.

Now the Corporate Coalition hunts me and those like me, and I’ve stayed hidden off-grid for eight years. But I can’t hide forever.

Something else is happening, something worse than every mistake made before.
And if I have to fight to survive…I’ll fight ‘til I die.
The Corporate Coalition will never take me alive.

My review:

*ARC provided by the author for an honest review*

This book is the second part of the prequel of the Legacy Code series. It picks up where we left in Part 1.

Again, it's a short book. I wished it was longer, because with what we found out in this book, I'm even more excited about this!
Anders is still one big mystery, but I definitely like him. He may not be trusted 100%, but I still like him ;)

This book is full of action and even more mysteries, but I loved it! It's a shame I read it one sitting, because now I want MORE :D I cannot wait for Part 3!

The cover of the third book in this series
How did I find it?

Goodreads always recommends you books based on what’s on your shelves or what you’re currently reading. This time, they recommended me the third book of this series. The cover caught my eye so much and I couldn’t resist not looking what this series is about. And I think the blurb of the first book sounds fun! A romance and a little suspense, what’s not to love about this, right? ;)
… but yes I admit, 80% of me wanting to read this book is because of the cover of Thief. Please don’t judge me :D

Review: Isla and the Happily Ever After

My rating: ★★★★★
Genre: young adult, contemporary, romance.
Series: Anna and the French Kiss #3

Blurb from Goodreads:

Love ignites in the City That Never Sleeps, but can it last?

Hopeless romantic Isla has had a crush on introspective cartoonist Josh since their first year at the School of America in Paris. And after a chance encounter in Manhattan over the summer, romance might be closer than Isla imagined. But as they begin their senior year back in France, Isla and Josh are forced to confront the challenges every young couple must face, including family drama, uncertainty about their college futures, and the very real possibility of being apart.

Featuring cameos from fan-favorites Anna, Étienne, Lola, and Cricket, this sweet and sexy story of true love—set against the stunning backdrops of New York City, Paris, and Barcelona—is a swoon-worthy conclusion to Stephanie Perkins’s beloved series.

My review:

Oh man ! I don’t even know where to start ! THIS BOOK IS SO GOOD!!!!

“I am hard on myself. But isn’t it better to be honest about these things before someone else can use them against you? Before someone else can break your heart? Isn’t it better to break it yourself?”

This is without doubt my favorite book from this trilogy. I might even be the best contemporary romance I’ve read since a long time! Okay, I’m going to try not to rant too much :D Here I go:

First let’s talk about Isla. She’s… amazing! I could relate a lot to her. It actually scared me how much I thought the same way as her about the ability of someone loving her. Her insecurities were very familiar to me. This sounds probably so cheesy, but in a way it taught me a little more about life.

“I catch a glimpse of his abdomen. Yummy. "Yummy tummy."
He startles. "What?"
"Hmm?”

Now, Josh…. *sighs* Oh man, where do I have to start? Wait, I know: HOW CAN SOMEONE MAKE PAINTING/DRAWING SO HOT?! Also, he is gorgeous, talented, sweet, gorgeous, caring, funny, charming, oh-so-swoony, gorgeous… Did I mention he’s gorgeous? ♥
Okay, but seriously. I love him a lot. He is definitely one of my favorite book boyfriends!
(There was only thing that got me mad at him: RABBITS WHY JOSH WHY? SERIOUSLY?!)

This is my favorite book in this series because this time we could actually see the relationship grow. With Anna only 10% of the book was her being in a relationship. With Lola… well to be honest, I don’t even remember (sorry!). But this time we could see it develop completely right from the beginning. And their relationship is the best. They struggled a little during the middle, because of a damn hair diffuser (you’ll understand while reading the book), but I’m SO happy with how everything turned out. Isla and Josh are so meant to be!

“Phones are distracting. The internet is distracting. The way he looked at you? He wasn't distracted. He was consumed.”

The ending though… was BEYOND perfection! All the characters were reunited and I cried so much because I was so happy. I thought my heart was going to explode because of all my feelings. I knew there was a ‘big’ ending, but oh god, it was so much better than I expected. When I finished the book, I hugged my book and squealed for a few minutes. It was that good.

“Josh grins. It’s wide and relieved and reveals a rarely seen pair of dimples. I could live inside those dimples for the rest of my life.”

Oh god, I can keep on and on about this book. The scenery, the plot, the characters, the ending… everything was perfect. This review is probably written with way too much excitement, so everything I forgot can be described with this gif:

PS: I apologize for all the caps lock. I couldn’t resist #sorrynotsorry

I found this book thanks to the ARC-party of EpicReads. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, then I really recommend their YouTube-channel.
They talk about everything in the YA-world. Every Wednesday they do a live hangout, called #TeaTime and talk about books, what they’re reading and so much more.
A few times a year they do an #ArcParty where they present all books that are coming out in the next few months. That is how I find most of my tbr books.
So, if you’re into YA, then you should really watch their videos. The two girls, Aubrey and Margot, hosting it are so funny and 100% real booknerds! ;)

Review: Smolder by Lacey Weatherford

My rating: ★★★★★
Genre: new adult, romance, contemporary
Series: Crush #4

Blurb from Goodreads:

The last thing Russ Weston ever wanted was to be called a hero. A normal guy, out doing the job he was trained to do, he’s nothing special—at least he doesn’t think so. All that changes, though, on the day he rescues renowned psychiatrist, Evelyn McKnight, from drowning.
Suddenly thrown in the spotlight, Russ becomes the center of media frenzy and he hates it. One thing he doesn’t hate, however, is the good doctor. Unable to deny the sparks between them, Russ wants Evie in a bad way. Unfortunately for him, Evie seems determined to continue nursing the broken heart she’s been clinging to for years, since the death of her fiancé.

Always up for a good challenge, Russ pursues her anyway, steadily chipping away at her walls of resistance. Just when he thinks he finally has her in his grasp, everything falls apart and Russ discovers that love can be messy, messy, messy.
Desperately trying to pick up the pieces, Russ realizes sometimes when you love someone you have to set them free—even if doing so may cost him Evie, permanently.

My review:

I love the first three books in this series so much. It’s crazy how much I love Cami and Dylan/Hunter. But I always had a special place in my heart for Russ. I was always curious to find out more about him, so of course I was SUPER happy to find out about this book!

Russ is everything I though he was. And even more. I though it wasn’t possible to love him more. Boy, I was so wrong. He’s such an amazing friend, he’s funny, freaking hot (!!!) and so sweet. Yes, he is definitely a hero. Even if he doesn’t think so.

This book is in Russ’ POV, but Cami and Dylan appear a lot in it too. The combination of the two was just perfect. I think my heart burst from happiness in the ending!

This book is super sweet/perfect and I don’t feel like I need to say more, because if you liked the previous books in this series, you will want to read this book for sure.

However, I do have a warning: DO NOT READ THIS BOOK BEFORE THE OTHER BOOKS IN THE SERIES! I know this is a stand-alone/companion, but I think reading this one first is not a good idea. It will be weird because it contains MAYOR spoilers from the rest of the series. You won’t feel the same emotions while reading the rest of the series then or the other way around. Trust me on this.

Anyway, I am super glad how this series ended. I wish there was more, but this book was a very good way to say good-bye to three of my favorite characters ♥

Weekly recommendation: Adaptations

Books adaptations are tricky. It can be perfect… or it can be ruined if every possible way. Every booknerd knows this. There’s no in between. It’s really rare that an adaptation is actually better than the book, but it happens sometimes. The five books I’m recommending you today are very good, but I loved the movie just a tiny bit more…

Review: Hopeless by Colleen Hoover

My rating: ★★★★★
Genre: young/new adult, romance, contemporary
Series: Hopeless #1

Blurb from Goodreads:

Sometimes discovering the truth can leave you more hopeless than believing the lies…

That’s what seventeen-year-old Sky realizes after she meets Dean Holder. A guy with a reputation that rivals her own and an uncanny ability to invoke feelings in her she’s never had before. He terrifies her and captivates her all in the span of just one encounter, and something about the way he makes her feel sparks buried memories from a past that she wishes could just stay buried.

Sky struggles to keep him at a distance knowing he’s nothing but trouble, but Holder insists on learning everything about her. After finally caving to his unwavering pursuit, Sky soon finds that Holder isn’t at all who he’s been claiming to be. When the secrets he’s been
keeping are finally revealed, every single facet of Sky’s life will change forever.

My review:

He tilts his head towards mine and narrows his eyes.
‘‘You have no idea how bad I want to get up that early.’’
He flashes me his dimple-laden grin and I faint. No… literally. I fainted.

This is the first book I read by Colleen Hoover. I knew her books were good thanks to the thousands of amazing reviews. But damn… I wasn’t prepared for this.
This books was so intense! It ripped me apart into million pieces. I never expected this book to be so good. If I hadn’t such a busy week I would have probably finished this book in one or two sittings. It kept me on edge and thinking constantly.

“It's real, Six. You can't get mad at a real ending. Some of them are ugly. It's the fake happily ever afters that should piss you off.”

Sky is a very complex character. I liked her, but sometimes I didn’t agree with the decisions she took (view spoiler). Still, I admire her. She’s been through an insanely rough time. I’m not even going to try to sum up everything… it’s almost impossible.

“Fuck all the firsts, Sky. The only thing that matters to me with you are the forevers.”

This brings me to Dean Holder. First of all: it made me a little sad he didn’t use his first name, Dean. Anyways… I LOVE Holder! I was intrigued with him from the moment Sky met him. I couldn’t get enough of him. He was mysterious and his connection with Sky is so unique.
I liked how they both helped each other understand everything. They were very good for each other. They were very intense yes, but they healed each other in a way no one else could.

“I’ve been looking for you my whole damn life.”

And what they’ve been through together is insane… it completely blew my mind. Sky thought Holder was intense, but I thought the whole book was intense! There were so much myseries and secrets in the beginning. And as all the mysteries where revealed I don’t think I was able to think straight anymore. I was completely shocked (view spoiler). I just stared at that page for a while with big eyes and without taking a breath. I didn’t see it coming AT ALL. And from that moment the book just kept surprising me. Sometimes in the most terrible way, sometimes it the cutest/best way.

“Breckin, this is Holder. Holder is not my boyfriend, but if I catch him trying to break the record for best first kiss with another girl, then he'll soon be my not breathing non-boyfriend.”

Colleen, is one hell of a writer! This will definitely not be the last book I read from her.
I can’t wait to read Losing Hope in Holder’s POV!
By the way: I also liked Six a lot! I would love to find out more about her! Same about Breckin. I wouldn’t mind a book in their POV ;)

“It’s what happens when two people become one: they no longer only share love. They also share all of the pain, heartache, sorrow, and grief.”

PS: I feel like my feelings about this book are all over the place, so I apologize if my review is too vague, doesn’t make sense or whatever :D Describing my exact feelings about this book is…impossible. Just… please… read this book!

Get to know the author #3: Tammara Webber

Every two weeks I'll present you one of my favorite authors. There are a lot, so be prepared! ;) This week I'm going to talk about Tammara Webber!

Personal info from her blog:

“I'm a hopeful romantic who adores novels with happy endings, because there are enough sad endings in real life. Before writing full-time, I was an undergraduate academic advisor, economics tutor, planetarium office manager, radiology call center rep, and the palest person to ever work at a tanning salon. I married my high school sweetheart, and I'm Mom to three adult kids and four very immature cats.”

She writes New Adult, contemporary romances.

Her books (linked to Goodreads):

-      Easy
-      Breakable

-      Between the Lines
-      Where You Are
-      Good For You
-      Here Without You

I don’t know if she has new books planned, but I hope so! ;)

My thoughts about her :

My copy of Breakable and
signed bookplate
I read Easy in January 2014 and it introduced me to New Adult. It was the first book I read from this genre, and I’m hooked since then. Easy is easily (see what I did there? ;D) one of my favorite books of all times! Tammara has an amazing writing style! I loved Breakable too of course (again: one of my favs), but I have to admit: I haven’t read the Between The Lines series. Although I’m definitely planning to! I’m sure it’s awesome too. I hope I’ll be able to purchase the books soon ;)

Anyways, if you love New Adult, then I’m definitely recommending you the Contours of the Heart duology! It’s perfect. Seriously, trust me on this! It will rip your heart into a million pieces and then surprise you at the most unexpected moments. Sounds fun, huh? ;)
